When Terrence Howard didn’t reprise his role of James Rhodes in the massively successful Iron Man in the Marvel sequel, it caused quite a bit of controversy. Between rumors of contract disputes and difficulty working with the actor on set, no one really knew the whole story, but his Marvel Cinematic Universe was pretty tame on the controversy scale.

In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2015, the actor casually mentioned that he slapped his wife in front of his children, resulting in him catching a deserved amount of criticism. In his words, “She was talking to me real strong, and I lost my mind and slapped her in front of the kids.”

Howard typically uses his Twitter account to promote his FOX series Empire, often live-tweeting new episodes. It’s unclear what sparked his outpouring of personal beliefs, but on Saturday night, Howard used the social media platform to dispute his previous admission of domestic abuse. In the interview with Roling Stone, he claimed he was merely defending himself as his then-wife was macing him.

When Howard was only two, he witnessed his father stab and kill a man in a mall while they were waiting in line to see Santa, so he’s no stranger to violence in his life.

The actor might have admitted to striking his then-wife, but multiple other women have come forward to say he assaulted them. Howard, however, has only admitted to the one incident of violence.

See the rest of Howard’s tweets about abuse, which includes saying assault across genders is an “eye for an eye.”
