Ranking Horror’s Top Slasher Villains

It’s Friday The 13th, so we decided to celebrate by taking a look back at some of the best slasher villains in the history of the horror genre.

The slasher is one of the most produced horror sub-genres in history, and those movies have created dozens of villains for fans to fear.

A few of these villains however, stand out among the rest. These killers have become icons in pop culture over the years, and their faces are meant to send chills down your spine.

6. Chucky

Chucky was hilarious at times, but he wasn’t often as scary as he was intended to be. Normally, he was just kind of a prop.

If you have a fear of dolls, Chucky made you tremble. The trouble is, most of us just look at him as nothing more than a toy. He can be easily dealt with.

The other factor that keeps Chucky at the bottom of this list is his need for assistance. He wasn’t good enough on his own, so the thing got a bride and some kids. 

5. Leatherface

Leatherface is terrifying, mainly because he was somewhat unpredictable. The only problem though, is that he didn’t go much but run and scream.

Unlike other slasher villains, you could see and hear Leatherface coming from a mile away. Other villains add to their terrifying abilities by being able to sneak up on you, but Leatherface is way too loud and destructive.

While Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the best horror films of all time, much of the fear comes from the concept of the family. Leatherface is wierd, but nothing more than a prop in a grander scheme.

4. Freddy Krueger

Freddy may be one of the most recognizable, but his story got too ridiculous down the road. 

Yes, the concept of a killer haunting your dreams is frightening, but only if you put yourself in the character’s shoes. As a casual audience member, it’s easy to regard the idea as silly.

Even so, Freddy’s demented sense of humor and twisted past send him into the top four.

3. Ghostface

The best part about Ghostface is that he’s self-aware. The killer has a sense of humor and isn’t afraid to take jabs at the villains that came before.

Ghostface also succeeds in being terrifying as an entity – not just as one man. The fact that many have donned the mask and cape,  and still struck fear into people’s hearts – shows how far his idea goes.

2. Jason Voorhees

Jason Voorhees has been to space, hell, and everywhere in between – and the villain has still proven he can’t die. 

The eternal capabilites of Jason make him one of the top killers of all time, but that isn’t the only thing he’s got going for him. Jason has a past that gives him a motive, a mask that fans can recognize almost instantly, and the uncanny ability to move silently while stalking his prey.

Many of the Friday The 13th movies aren’t great, but Jason has still managed to get more made than any other villain. 

1. Michael Myers

Halloween is one of the scariest movies of all time, and that’s largely due to the fact that Michael Myers is genuinely terrifying.

The killer was a psychopathic child who grew up in prison. That background alone is enough to create an epic villain, but his blank stare takes it a step further.

Myers is cold, powerful, and sneaky, and he never makes things too goofy. Everytime the guy is on screen, the audience is full of fear.
