U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps avenged his 200-meter butterfly loss from four years ago, winning the gold medal by a mere four one-hundredths of a second.

In arguably the most hyped swimming event of the Olympics so far, Phelps defeated South African swimmer Chad Le Clos, who handed Phelps a loss in the event at the London Olympics in 2012. That loss sparked a rivalry between the two, with harsh words going either direction over the last few years.

Yes, this one had a little extra heat, some of which came from Phelps apparently staring down Le Clos on Monday โ€” he was likely looking off into the distance, but it was still enough to drive the Internet crazy.

And for a bit, it looked like Le Clos would be his primary competition. But Le Clos faded down the stretch and failed to medal.

The 2016 Olympics have been a revenge tour of sorts for Phelps, who also helped the U.S. avenge its 4x100m freestyle relay loss to France from 2012 with an epic turn.
