Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Co., has joined the bid to bring the 2024 Olympics to Los Angeles, California. Iger will serve as the vice chair of the bid committee’s board of directors and will be joining former Olympics swimmer Janet Evans, retired NBA champion Earvin “Magic” Johnson, nine-time Paralympian Candace Cable and labor leader Maria Elena Durazo, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The Disney CEO has previous Olympic ties and experience as he formerly worked with late TV producer Roone Arledge during the games broadcasts from 1976 to 1988. Iger’s appointment to the bid committee’s board was announced on Tuesday.

Iger mentioned in a statement, “The Olympic Movement celebrates the indomitable human spirit and brings people together across continents and cultures in a powerful, shared experience.” He also mentioned: “It’s an important endeavor, and I’m proud to support LA 2024’s effort to bring the Games back to Los Angeles and to reimagine them in ways that engage the global community, elevate the movement, and inspire a new generation.”
Iger was also involved in the effort to bring the Rams and the Chargers to a new stadium site in Carson, California as he served as a non-executive chairman for Carson Holdings. NFL owners eventually chose an Inglewood site for the new stadium to house the rams, according to Variety.
Casey Wasserman, the chair of LA 2024, said in a statement: “Bob brings a proven track record on how to reach out to young people and families by engaging them with compelling content delivered through the latest digital technology. That is precisely what the Olympic Family is looking for right now under the visionary Olympic Agenda 2020 roadmap, and what LA 2024 intends to provide.”
