Fantastic Beasts already has multiple sequels plannedwith Dumbledore already confirmed for the second film.

So get out your wands and jump into 1929 New York City where Newt Scarmander accidentally let loose a few mystical creatures.

While the main storyline is not about Newt and his new friends hunting down these odd little creatures, it is revealed that deep down Newt is a conservationist who is caring for and rescuing mistreated and misunderstood animals.

During this period of time in America, all “beasts” are banned. Newt came to this side of the pond with one mission in mind, but instead got wrapped up in the main storyline.

Fantastic Beasts is just as much about saving endangered animals as it is about anything else, with a heartfelt story about the importance of animal rights and conservation.

In fact these “beasts” aren’t beasts are all. They are some of the most adorable hilarious, and smartest creatures in the Harry Potter Universe.

Let’s get to know them a bit more…

Bowtruckle

ย The Bowtruckle looks like a cross between a stick bug and a leaf plant.ย

They are small creatures that resemble a plant and spend their days guarding trees that wands are made of.

“The Bowtruckle eats only insects, and is a sweet and intensely shy creature, but extremely loyal, and it can be very handy to have around when there are locks to pick.”

Newt’s main man is a Bowtruckle who spends most of the film in his pocket.ย

“Pickett has attachment issues, so Newt knows he shouldn’t have favorites, but like he loves Pickett to sit in his top pocket,” Redmayne said. “I felt for him quite badly.”

Niffler

This little platypus looking guy causes the most trouble. He escapes as soon as Newt sets foot in New York City and causes quite the scene at a bank, giving up Newt’s indentity as a Wizard with banned beasts in tow.

While it looks like a cross between a mole and a duck-billed platypus, the design of this gentle creature, which is attracted to anything that glitters, is actually inspired by another animal.

“One of the big inspirations was the honey badger,” Fantastic Beasts visual effects supervisor Christian Manz told Entertainment Weekly. “We saw some great footage of a honey badger raiding somebody’s house with a completely insatiable desire to find food and nothing would get in its way.”ย

The amount of gold and jewels that can fit into this small creatures pouch is amazing. He’s a bit of a hoarder of the finer things in life.

Swooping Evil

Newt first introduces the Swooping Evil to his new muggle (or no-maj) pal Jacob Kowalski.

Newt and Jacob sneak into the briefcase to care for the creatures. While the Swooping Evil may look scary and Newt isn’t sure what it’s venom will do, he proves to be quite useful later in the movie.

“Looks like a cross between a reptile and an extremely large butterfly, when at rest, the Swooping Evil lives in a green spiny cocoon. But when it spreads its colorful, spiked wings, it is strangely beautiful.”

It lives in a cocoon in Newt’s pocket and actually follows his commands! He sort of reminds us of a Yo-Yo…with wings.

Demiguise

This sloth-like creature with silver fur can become invisible whenever it likes and has the ability to predict or envision future events.

“The Demiguise is fundamentally a peaceful beast, but it will give a rather nasty nip when provoked or feels threatened. Unfortunately for the Demiguise, its long, silky, silvery hair can be spun into Invisibility Cloaks, making its pelt highly valuable.”

Newt’s Demiguise escapes and is almost impossible to find because the little guy is invincible, until they spot a few floating, moving purses in a department store.

As it turns out, the Demiguise is in the store to help care for another mystical creature.

Although he looks like a sloth, he really is quite fast!

Tunderbird

The Thunderbird is a giant, magical bird that is held in high regard. So much so, that one of the four Houses at America’s Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is named after the creature.

“The Thunderbird is a large, regal avian creature native to the arid climate of Arizona,” Fantastic Beasts visual effects supervisor Christian Manz told EW.

“Its head is similar to that of an eagle or, in the wizarding world, a Hippogriff. Its multiple powerful wings shimmer with cloud-and sun-like patterns and their flapping can create storms. Thunderbirds can also sense danger.”

Newt’s Thunderbird is endangered and travelled all the way back home in a magical suitcase to be set free where he belongs.
