Beloved standup Charlie Murphy comedian Charlie Murphy died on Wednesday after a battle with leukemia.

The 57-year-old actor, writer and comedian, who was the brother of Eddie Murphy, died in New York City, where he had been undergoing chemotherapy.

Murphy was best known for his work on the Comedy Central series Chappelle’s Show. His skits where he and Dave Chappelle reenacted his encounters with Prince and Rick James have become two of the series most revered pieces.

He had most recently been on the Comedy Get Down Tour with George Lopez, Cedric the Entertainer, D.L. Hughley and Eddie Griffin.

News of Murphy’s death spread quickly across the internet with numerous celebrities joining the conversation to voice their thoughts on the late comic.

Aside from his standup, Murphy was also a fan favorite actor on numerous TV shows and film. In addition to Chappelle’s Show, Murphy made appearances on Are We There Yet, The Boondocks, Black Dynamite and Wild N Out.

In film, his most recent role was the horror comedy Meet the Blacks in 2016. He also had roles in Night at the Museum, Lottery Ticket and Roll Bounce.

His contributions to film went further than acting. He wrote the screenplay for Norbit, the infamous comedy starring his brother Eddie in multiple roles. Charlie also had a small voice role in the film.

There was a heavy outpour of sympathy from social media after Murphy’s passing. It came as a shock to many fans, as his illness was not publicly known.

 

Famous fans from all realms of pop culture came out of the woodwork to share their admiration for the late comedian. In particular, the comedy and music communities shared numerous experiences with Murphy and his work.

Murphy had three children, two of which were with his late wife Tisha Taylor Murphy. She died in December 2009 after a battle with cervical cancer.
