In front of the Olympic Beach Volleyball Arena on Rio’s famed Copacabana beach, a beach-goer discovered human body parts that had washed up onto the shore. With only 36 days to go before the start of the Rio Olympics, the situation just got that much worse in the host country of Brazil.

An officer of the Military Police in Rio, Andre Luiz, mentioned that the beach goer found a dismembered foot and another body part still unidentified, according to CNN. The body parts likely belong to a woman or a young adult according to the Police.

The country has already been plagued with financial problems, an outbreak of the Zika virus, a mishap-prone Olympic torch, and now this latest incident is only putting more tension on the host country of Brazil.

The acting governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Francisco Dornelles, mentioned his concerns for the upcoming Olympic games just two days prior to the discovery of the gruesome body parts found on the Copacabana beach. Dornelles stated to the Brazilian newspaper O Globo, “I am optimistic about the games, but I have to show the reality. We can make a great Olympics, but if some steps are not taken, it can be a big failure.”

The financial issues in the country are a serious concern as the state declared an official emergency and requested a federal bailout earlier this month, according to CNN. The state has been unable to pay its law enforcement and this has caused quite a stir including several protests. Several people at a Brazilian airport were holding up signs stating: “Welcome to hell. Police and firefighters don’t get paid, whoever comes to Rio de Janiero will not be safe.”

Hopefully with the kickoff of the Olympics approaching the country will be able to sort out these issues to provide a safe environment for everyone in attendance at the 2016 summer Olympic games.
