The alligator that was responsible for the death of a 2-year-old child has been “removed” from Disney World’s Seven Seas Lagoon and euthanized, according to a report from PEOPLE magazine.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) issued a statement that they are confident the alligator responsible for the attack has been removed. The commission has suspended all trapping activities in the nearby vicinity of where the attack occurred.

“There are no words to describe the profound sadness we feel for the family of Lane Graves,” said Nick Wiley, executive director of the FWC. “We will continue to keep this family close to our hearts as they deal with the pain and grief of the loss of Lane.”

Another spokesperson confirmed that the animal had been euthanized. Based on “expert analyses and observations by staff with intensive experience in investigating fatal alligator bite incidents,” the FWC was able to correctly identify which alligator was the culprit.

Officials also took into account witness description, proximity to the site of Lane’s attack, as well as the size of the alligator.

The New York Daily News reports that trappers killed six alligators before they were convinced they had removed the one responsible for dragging Lane underwater.
