Author Oscar Wilde is considered one of the best writers of the 19th century, an impressive feat considering he only had one novel published. That novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, will be getting a theatrical adaptation which Annie Clark, a.k.a. musician St. Vincent, will direct, according to Variety.
The novel features the wealthy, hedonistic Dorian Gray, who has managed to capture his essence in a portrait of himself, with his likeness growing older over the years while Gray himself maintains an immaculate appearance. One of the twists in Clark’s version of the story is it will feature a female protagonist instead of a male.

Clark made her directorial debut earlier this year with the female-directed horror anthology XX, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. She also co-wrote and scored her segment, “Birthday Party,” which starred Melanie Lynskey, Joe Swanberg, and Sheila Vand. An accomplished musician, St. Vincent has won a Grammy for Best Alternative Album in 2015, in addition to scoring a Smithsonian American Ingenuity Award and the Q Maverick award, which both recognize outstanding achievements and innovation in the arts.
Lionsgate is slated to develop the project who have tapped David Birke to write. Birke wrote last year’s Oscar-nominated Elle and also wrote the horror film based on an internet legend Slender Man.
Picture of Dorian Gray is often lauded for its unique blend of various genres, ranging from romance to drama to gothic horror.
St. Vincent is far from the first musician to dabble with other mediums, with Rob Zombie being one of the prime examples of musicians who have found success in both the film and music industry.
In the ’90s, Zombie became a heavy metal sensation with his band White Zombie, dipping his toe into the waters of directing with a variety of music videos. The musician made his feature-length directorial debut with House of 1000 Corpses, before going on to make films like Lords of Salem, 31, and a remake of John Carpenter’s Halloween.
