Despite regularly earning massive amounts of financial success, movie studios have often shown hesitance at referring to a movie as a “horror film,” instead referring to it as a “psychological thriller.” The two terms aren’t mutually exclusive, but with many reducing the horror genre to merely sex and violence, marketing materials will sometimes try to appeal to a more mature audience by playing up the psychological terror. Filmmaker Darren Aronofsky‘s latest film, mother!, has been kept in relative secrecy, with the first teaser clearly demonstrating that the film will lean into its horror elements. You can watch the teaser above.
The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Kristen Wiig, Ed Harris, and Michelle Pfeiffer. Little is known about the film’s plot, other than a couple’s relationship will be tested when they encounter uninvited guests at their home. It’s unclear which actors will be playing the couple and which will be the uninvited guests at this time.

Seeing as the film stars Academy Award-winning and nominated talent, one might understand if the marketing aimed for the cinephile audiences, but as you can see in the trailer above, the footage is already proving to be quite horrific.

Mother! will be Aronofsky’s first film since Noah, which was a relatively successful biblical epic, earning over $350 million worldwide. Noah also received relatively positive reviews, earning 74% on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. However, the film didn’t entirely resonate with audiences, with the tale of Noah and his arc occupying little of audiences’ memories.
Prior to Noah, the filmmaker earned massive success with another film that toed the line between psychological thriller and horror, Black Swan. In the film, Natalie Portman starred as a ballet dancer with the unique opportunity to demonstrate her skills in an incredibly difficult ballet, with the requirements taking a physical and mental toll on her, causing her to descend into madness in which she couldn’t discern reality from hallucinations.

Stars Lawrence and Bardem has both starred in their fair share of thrillers, with Lawrence starring in films like The House at the End of the Street and Winter’s Bone, and with Bardem starring as the villainous Anton Chigurh in No Country For Old Men in addition to playing the villain in the James Bond adventure Skyfall.
Mother! will land in theaters September 15.
