Fall Movie Preview 2017

As summer comes to a close, people are finishing up their vacations and preparing to return to the routine of work and school and weekend relaxation, which also means a new crop of fall films to look forward to.

With every year that passes, movie studios are bucking the tradition of using early fall as a failed movie dumping ground, and pushing earlier and earlier into the season with promising releases. 2017 has a good lineup of films that we’re excited about – as you can see for yourself, below.

Here is our 2017 Fall Movie Preview, for your viewing pleasure.

September

Marvel’s Inhumans – Marvel’s newest TV series will get its debut in IMAX theaters, with a full IMAX premiere of two episodes. If you’re a Marvel fan, be sure to get a ticket. (9/1)

IT – This movie remake of Stephen King’s famous novel and the popular ’90s TV miniseries, has been capturing a lot of attention with its impressive trailers, and viral marketing campaign – which has almost been too effective, by scaring people with creepy clown encounters. ((9/8)

mother! – No one can say for sure what they saw in the first trailer for Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky’s psychological thriller starring Jennifer Lawrence, but it looked more than intriguing. Be sure to check out the trailer if you haven’t. (9/15) 

American Assassin – The Maze Runner star Dylan O’Brien jumps into this espionage thriller, which promises a lot of twist, turns and betrayals, with Michael Keaton playing an questionable mentor, and Taylor Kitsch as the rival protege that O’Brien’s assassin must take out. Looks like a good pick for action fans. (9/15)

Kingsman: The Golden Circle – Matthew Vaughn’s first ever sequel film boasts a top-notch cast that includes Colin Firth, Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore and Halle Berry – plus, even bigger action and comedic thrills than the first film. (9/22)

Stronger – This true-life tale of inspiration will hit home with many viewers. Jake Gyllenhal stars as Jeff Bauman, a man who was injured in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, while trying to win back his ex-girlfriend (Tatiana Maslany) to regain control of his life. (9/22)

The LEGO Ninjago Movie – If you loved The LEGO Movie and The LEGO Batman Movie, then you will probably love this new spinoff film, which will adapt the popular LEGO Ninjago series for the big screen. (9/22)

Flatliners – This remake of the popular 1990 horror/thriller is pretty much what we’d expect from the traditional fall season dumping ground. (9/29)

American Made – If you like Netflix’s Narcos, then you will definitely be interested in this film, that tells the story of a unscrupulous pilot (Tom Cruise) who starts drug running for both the CIA and South American drug cartels. (9/29)

October

Blade Runner 2049 – Ryan Gosling and a returning Harrison Ford are all the reason needed to check out this long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s sci-fi cult-classic. The fact that it’s being directed by Sicario and Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve is just means that it’s far less likely to disappoint than most long-delayed sequels to famous films. (10/6)

The Mountain Between Us – This survival thriller/drama starring Idris Elba and Kate Winslet has been impressing all those who watch the trailer, offering a great fall film for the adults to enjoy. (10/6)

My Little Pony: The Movie – For the kids (especially the girls), this is an animated feature that’s definitely worth checking out. (10/6)

The Foreigner – Action fans will get a chance to see one of the greats shine, as Jackie Chan steps into a starring role for this action-thriller revenge film, about a man who must tap into some long-dormant skills for espionage and combat, after terrorists kill his daughter. (10/13)

Happy Death Day – If you’ve ever wanted to see the concept of Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day explored from a horror film perspective, than this is the film for you! In it, a college student named Tree keeps reliving the last day before her horrific murder, as she tries to solve the mystery of who her killer is. (10/13)

Marshall – This biopic brings Marvel’s Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman into his third true-life role (after 42 and Get On Up), playing Thurgood Marshall, the first black Supreme Court Justice. (10/13)

The Snowman – This serial killer mystery/thriller brings Michael Fassbender and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation star Rebecca Ferguson into the adaptation of author Jo Nesbø’s bestselling novel. (10/20)

Geostorm – You wouldn’t off the mark for assuming that this disaster survival thriller is the latest from Independence Day and Day After Tomorrow director Roland Emmerich, but it’s actually Dean Devlin is actually at the helm of this for this story about satellites that begin to cause a cataclysmic storm all over the Earth. (10/20)

Boo! 2: A Madea Halloween – What’s there to say? The first Madea Halloween made enough at the box office to warrant a sequel, and so we’re getting that sequel. If you’re a fan of Tyler Perry’s Madea, you’ll be in the theater. (10/20)

Only the Brave – Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski takes on the real-life tale of firemen battling a wildfire in Yarnell, Arizona back in 2013. Everything that ‘Main Street’ America will love to see. (10/20)

Jigsaw – It’s Halloween time, and the Saw franchise is back. We couldn’t think of anything more fitting than that! (10/27)

Thank You For Your Service – This real life story about an Iraq war vet struggling to get back to civilian life may almost be too real and timely for comfort. See also: Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit this past summer. (10/27)

Suburbicon – This latest directorial effort from George Clooney sees Matt Damon playing a quiet suburban family man, whose world is upended when his family is the victim of a home invasion. It looks like a dark comedy with some big star power behind it, and adults will enjoy. 10/27)

November

Thor: Ragnarok – Marvel’s third Thor movie is going to be a lot different than the first two installments, more influenced by Guardians of the Galaxy, than anything else. With The Hulk co-starring, and some exciting new characters being introduced, this should be a one of the most enjoyable Marvel movies we’ve seen in awhile. (11/3)

A Bad Moms Christmas – For the legions of moms who loved the Bad Moms movie, this will be an even more potent exploration of the madness moms face every holiday season. (11/3)

Daddy’s Home 2 – Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell made their second odd-couple pairing a comedic hit, and with Mel Gibson and John Lithgow both joining the franchise as Wahlberg and Ferrell’s fathers (respectively), things are only. (11/10)

Murder on the Orient Express – The Agatha Christie classic story gets a modern remake from Kenneth Branagh and an all-star cast that includes Johnny Depp, Michaelle Pfeiffer, Willem Dafoe, Penelope Cruz, Josh Gad, Daisy Ridley and Judy Dench. In other words: this is the star-powered movie to see this fall. (11/10)

Justice League – After all the production shakeups and controversy, supehrero movie fans are waiting to see if Warner Bros. and DC Films can pull out another big win, following the massive success of Wonder Woman. (11/17)

Olaf’s Frozen Adventure – This Frozen animated short should hold fans of the franchise over until Frozen 2 arrives (11/22)

Molly’s Game – Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba lead this too-crazy-to-believe-it true-life tale of a professional skier who became one of the leading hosts of high stakes poker games for elite and wealthy clients. It’s also the directorial debut of Aaron Sorkin, which is intriguing in and of itself. (11/22)

Death Wish – Bruce Willis is starring in this remake of the classic Charles Bronson film – which is pretty much the only reason it gets a pass. Eli Roth (Hostel) directing a script from The A-Team‘s Joe Carnahan is also promising. (11/22)

Coco – Disney/Pixar’s fall film will bring Latin American themes and lore together with an exciting musical adventure. Could easily be this year’s Moana. (11/22)
