The Dark Tower shot straight to the top of the box office in its opening weekend.
Despite mostly negative reviews, the star power of Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, and the decades of anticipation for Stephen King‘s fantasy opus to be adapted into a film will propel The Dark Tower to a first place finish at a box office that is offering little in the way of fresh competition.

The Dark Tower earned $7.8 million from 3,451 locations on Friday and is expected to bring that total to $19.5 million through the weekend. The Dark Tower was made with a $60 million dollar budget. Reshoots and delays left many fans worried about the film even before the negative reviews started to pour in.
That leaves The Dark Tower will have the second smallest total for a box office winner this year behind the much more modestly budgeted Split ($9 million budget, $14.4 million opening weekend).
After two weeks at number one, Christopher Nolan’s critically-praised war film Dunkirk slips to the second place spot at the box office. The film is on track for a $17.6 million opening weekend after bringing in $5 million on Friday from 4,014 locations. Those numbers will put Dunkirk at $132 million domestic. The film has already grossed $300 million worldwide.
The Emoji Movie earned $3.8 million from 4,075 locations on Friday and is projected for $12.4 million over the weekend. Girls Trip earned $3.6 million on Friday from 2,582 locations and is set for an $11.4 million weekend. Halle Berry’s Kidnap opened to $3.7 million on Friday from 2,378 locations and is looking at a $10.2 million opening weekend.

Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), the last Gunslinger, is locked in an eternal battle with Walter O’Dim (Matthew McConaughey), also known as the Man in Black. The Gunslinger must prevent the Man in Black from toppling the Dark Tower, the key that holds the universe together. With the fate of worlds at stake, two men collide in the ultimate battle between good and evil.
The Dark Towerย directed and co-written by Nikolaj Arcel. The film is a continuation of the stories from Stephen King’s long-running science fiction and fantasy saga, with references to some of King’s other works.
