Stephen King's 'It' Gets The IMAX Treatment This September

The advancements in digital cameras has made it possible for films to play in formats previously saved for only the biggest blockbusters, but the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's It aims to change that with the announcement it will have IMAX engagements in select cities.

Producer Barbara Muschietti made the announcement on her Instagram account.

Films like Marvel's The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, and Dunkirk have dominated Hollywood film engagements in IMAX theaters, allowing for audiences to be more completely immersed in the spectacle.

Due to the success of these films in IMAX theaters, various theater chains have designated certain screens as offering heightened viewing experiences, developing an advanced picture and sound system for any feature that might play in it. These experiences, however, are often referred to as "fake IMAX" due to how they pale in comparison to the real thing.

Horror movies don't often get the IMAX treatment, so with It heading to the massive format, the studio is clearly banking on this film being the biggest horror event of the fall.

The storyline revolves around a group of young kids in Derry, Maine who come face-to-face with their worst fears when they square off against an evil clown named Pennywise, whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries. The cast of IT includes: Bill Skarsgård, Javier Botet, Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Chosen Jacobs, Wyatt Oleff, Nicholas Hamilton, Owen Teague and Logan Thompson.

Previous horror films that have hit the IMAX format, like 2012's Prometheus, featured a sense of spectacle to those who experience it, as it offered incredible visual effects.

Based both on the original novel and 1990 mini-series adaptation, It isn't known for its compelling visuals, as it's a mostly grounded story, so it's tough to say exactly how ambitious director Andy Muschietti got with the film.

The new adaptation of It lands in theaters September 8.
