Marwan Kenzari has joined the cast of Disney's forthcoming live-action adaptation of Aladdin, in the role of the villainous Jafar.

Nasim Pedrad, most recognizable to audiences from her time on Saturday Night Live, also joins the cast in the comedic-relief role of Jasmine's handmaiden Mara, a role created for the live-action version.

Will Smith stars as the film's genie, while Mena Massoud will play Aladdin and try to sweep Naomi Scott's Jasmine off her feet.

Kenzari is set to break out in the forthcoming remake of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express.

Aladdin is the latest in a string of films including Maleficent, Cinderella, and Beauty and the Beast that has seen Disney's live-action studio remaking or building on the foundations of their animated classics. The film has been controversial.

Below is a synopsis of the film.

"Soar away on a magic carpet ride of nonstop laughs and thrills in one of the most spectacular adventures of all time!

Disney is offering fans a whole new way to experience the wonders of Aladdin like never before, from the unforgettable moments of side-splitting comedy to the soaring adventure.

In the heart of an enchanted city, a commoner named Aladdin and his mischievous monkey Abu battle to save the free-spirited Princess Jasmine from the schemes of the evil sorcerer Jafar.

Aladdin's whole life changes with one rub of a magic lamp as a fun-loving, shape-shifting Genie appears and grants him three wishes, setting him on an incredible journey of discovery."
