George Segal, one of the stars of The Goldbergs, has died. He was 87. According to Deadline, Segal passed away on Tuesday in Santa Rosa, California, as a result of complications from bypass surgery.
In addition to his work on The Goldbergs, Segal also starred in projects such as Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Where’s Poppa?, and Just Shoot Me. Over the past eight years, he has been starring on The Goldbergs as Albert “Pops” Solomon, the father of Wendi McLendon-Covey’s Beverly Goldberg. The last episode that he filmed for the series before his death was episode 16, which will air on April 7. The ABC show will reportedly pay tribute to Segal on-air at some point this season.

Segal’s wife, Sonia Segal, released a statement to confirm his passing, which read, “The family is devastated to announce that this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery.” Prior to his longtime stint on The Goldbergs, Segal was in a number of film productions. As Deadline noted, he starred in films from Hollywood heavy-hitters such as Sidney Lumet (in Bye Bye Braverman), Carl Reiner (in Where’s Poppa?), and Stanley Kramer (in Ship of Fools). One of his most notable roles was in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, in which he starred alongside Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. His role in the film even garnered him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
Segal’s The Goldbergs co-star, McClendon-Covey has addressed the news of his passing on social media. On Instagram and Twitter, she posted a photo of herself and her late co-star. She captioned the photo on Twitter by writing, grateful.” As for her Instagram post, the actor posted a short message in which she noted, “Didn’t know the last time I saw you would be the last time I’d see you.” Many soon responded to McClendon-Covey’s post to share their own condolences. Carnie Wilson wrote, “So sorry sweetie, he was one of the great actors that just always did it right. Rest In Peace George.” Additionally, many fans also sent their love and support to the actor and the cast, with one fan writing, “Such sad news. He was such an amazing actor and person. All us Goldnerds send condolences to his family and to the entire cast and crew of the show. We are so sorry for your loss. He will be dearly missed!”
