Emily Blunt doesn’t have much in common with her Girl on the Train character, but she does understand the “mommy shaming” the film confronts.
The actress says the movie captures the “societal pressures” placed on women and while her character must overcome some serious obstacles, Blunt herself has experienced some of those same negative aspects of being a woman in the public eye.

She has two daughters with husband actor John Krasinski.
“I think there is a huge societal pressure on women when it comes to motherhood, this sort of mummy cult that goes on,” Blunt told The Guardian. “And I think it sort of makes women feel that they have to be a bit defensive about the choices that they make, whether they want to be a mother, whether they don’t, whether they want to breastfeed, whether they don’t. I could go on and on.”
The actress admitted that women can be other women’s hardest critics.
“In the domestic world, I think it’s when women can be a bit cruel about each other, more so than any other environment,” she explained. “And I think this film really captures that.”
