Blake Shelton gets super honest with his new album If I’m Honest and that means giving a little glimpse of what went on behind the scenes in his public split from fellow country star Miranda Lambert.
“When we recorded the vocals for some of these songs, I was only six months removed from when all the crap went down,” Shelton tells Billboard for its latest cover story. “When you have a broken heart โ at least when I do โ you got to get it out of your system. You want people to sympathize with you. I was at rock bottom, in the middle of hell.”

It’s no surprise then that the new album would be influenced by his experience.
“You can learn some facts of my divorce. Maybe not specifics, but you can get a general idea about it,” he admitted.
While that might mean some angry break-up songs, it also touches on some of the positive aspects of the hard times, especially the relationship that came out of it.
Shelton has been dating Gwen Stefani since the two Voice co-stars bonded over their simultaneous high-profile divorces, while slowly becoming friends on set. Soon it turned into something more serious.
“Next thing I know, I wake up and she’s all I care about, and I’m ยญwondering if she feels the same about me,” he shared.
That’s one of the things he believes his record reveals about his recent personal story.
“It is my divorce record, but maybe even more than that, it’s my happy, falling-in-love record too,” the country singer said.
