MTV is getting back to its roots and bringing back iconic music-focused show Total Request Live, The New York Times reports.

TRL ran from 1998 to 2008 and featured plenty of music videos, celebrity guests and a studio audience, all taking place at an iconic Times Square location in New York City.

"When you came into Times Square, you would say, 'Let's go to MTV,'" explained MTV president Chris McCarthy.

In an attempt to recapture that success, MTV is reviving the show, with McCarthy sharing that the reboot will arrive in October. The network is also building a new studio facing Times Square.

"If we're going to come back and reinvent MTV, the studio is a given," he said. "It is the centerpiece."

The move comes after MTV ratings have fallen over recent years and turnaround efforts by the network have been unsuccessful.

While TRL was originally hosted by Carson Daly, the reboot will be helmed by five relatively unknown hosts, including rapper and comedian DC Young Fly and Chicago radio host Erik Zachary.

The TRL reboot will join other nostalgia-inducing fare like the network's revamped Fear Factor, as well as a Laguna Beach-type show called Siesta Key.

"MTV's reinvention," McCarthy explained, "is coming by harnessing its heritage."
