Sleepy Hollow (1999) – Available 8/1
Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is one of the famous stories in the world of horror literature, resulting in various adaptations over the years. Tim Burton’s 1999 adaptation starring Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, and Christopher Walkenย has become one of the most successful of these adaptations and easily became the most gruesome.
When investigator Ichabodย Crane (Depp) moves into the small town of Sleepy Hollow to show them how the advancements in science can help unlock the truth behind various crimes, the town’s residents reveal that many mysterious activities go on in this town, with many people falling victim to the Headless Horseman. As Crane tries to uncover the truth behind this mysterious secret, he discovers the sordid history of the town itself, uncovering the Headless Horseman’s true nature.
Frequent collaborators Deppย and Burton work perfectly to one another’sย strengths, with Depp’s performance being eccentric and charming while Burton crafts beautifully creepy set pieces. Although the original story’s mythology is reinvented and embellished, the film captures the perfect tone for the source material and will set you up perfectly to head into fall.

The Addams Family (1991) – Available 8/1
Recent trends in movies and TV have been to revive old and familiar properties to tap into existing audiences, but The Addams Family proves that this is a trend that’s been around for decades.
A death and violence obsessed family lives on the outskirts of town, oblivious to how the rest of the town views them. Gomez Addams (Raรบl Juliรก) desperately misses his brother Fester (Christopher Lloyd) who went missing 25 years ago. When the family’s accountant discovers someone who looks just like Fester, they hatch a plan to infiltrate the family and obtain their riches.
Full of fantastic performances byย Juliรก, Lloyd, andย Anjelicaย Huston, who received a Golden Globe Award nomination, the film is goofy, campy, and devoid of sarcasm towards its source material, a trend more recent remakes have leaned into.
Funny Games (2007) (US) – Available 8/1
An almost shot-for-shot remake of the 1997 Austrian film Funny Games, the U.S. version taps Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, and Michael Pitt to tell this terrifying tale.
When a family heads to their lake house for the weekend, they are greeted by some overly friendly individuals who have a sinister demeanor. The two men begin to antagonize and assault the family, forcing them to carry out whatever sadistic wishes they demand. As the ordeal progresses, the motives behind the horrors become even more mysterious, frustrating the audience with the reasoning for the whole ordeal.
Far from being an enjoyable experience by any stretch of the imagination, both the original film and the remake were written and directed by Michael Haneke, with minimal differences between the two. Which version is “better” is up for debate, as both films are incredibly effective, but at least with this U.S. version, you don’t have to read subtitles.
Death Note (2017) – Available 8/25
