Demi Lovato is known for being open about her battles with addiction and eating disorders, and her new interview with American Way is no exception.

According to Entertainment Tonight, the pop star revealed to the magazine, "I lived fast and I was going to die young. I didn't think I would make it to 21."

Lovato opened up to discuss her early path to stardom and how the body image issues that plagued her along the way led to a struggle with drug and alcohol abuse.

While in rehab, Lovato was diagnosed with bulimia and bipolar disorder, conditions that seemed to be intertwined.

She revealed, "I thought, 'I'm not in treatment for a drug and alcohol problem.' But once I started eating again, the other issues got worse. It was like whack-a-mole."

Lovato often credited her continued sobriety on her long-term relationship with boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama, which ended earlier this month when they announced the split in a joint statement.

She has also been making headlines lately for her love-hate relationship with social media and has recently criticized celebrity culture.
