It’s been announced that the Stargate franchise is being revived as the anchor series for a brand new sci-fi exclusive streaming service.

The series is titled Stargate Origins, as reported by Variety, and will focus on Catherine Langford, the daughter of Paul Langford who was the archaeologist who discovered the Stargate.

The premise will consist of Catherine going on an adventure to save the Earth from a malicious darkness.

Stargate Command is the name of the brand new sci-fi streaming service created by MGM where the show’s first 10-episode season will be available.

Kevin Conroy, the president of digital and new platforms at MGM, spoke to reporters about the series and said, “We’ve been eager to revisit the Stargate franchise, and create an all-new story that honors the founding mythos and gives loyal fans more mystery and adventure.”

“We view Stargate Origins as a thank you to fans who have been keeping the spirit of the franchise alive for nearly 25 years. With the increasing popularity of digitally native content that can be streamed to any device, MGM is committed to the production of premium linear mid-form content and are proud to launch with Stargate Origins,” he continued.

MGM has not revealed a lot of information about Stargate Command, other than to say that there will both paid and free elements of the platform. More info is expected to be released in the coming weeks.

MGM’s president of worldwide television distribution and acquisitions, Chris Ottinger also spoke to journalists, saying, “We saw a need for a definitive hub for the Stargate fanbase to continue to enjoy news and content, both old and new. Stargate Command will open a new door for the community to celebrate and interact with all content in a way that has never been done before.”
