Simone Biles Takes Bronze and Laurie Hernandez Wins Silver in Women’s Beam Final

Simone Biles’ quest for five gold medals in Rio has come to an end during the final on the beam.

The gymnast, who has already won gold in the team finals with Team USA and gold medals in the women’s individual all-around and vault finals, took the bronze in the balance beam finals Monday in Rio, shocking many who had expected her to win, Sports Illustrated reports.

After Biles almost fell during her routine, she scored a 14.733, with Sanne Wevers of the Netherlands competing directly after her, scoring a 15.466 to take the gold medal spot. Biles’ American teammate, Laurie Hernandez, took the silver medal with a score of 15.333.

During Biles’ routine, she nearly fell off the beam at one point, using her hands to steady herself and severely impacting her score. Her final score was a marked change from her qualifying score of 15.633, but the fact that she won a medal after nearly falling is a testament to her talent.

Hernandez performed a strong routine, sticking her skills and delivering a flawless dismount to take the silver medal, making her the youngest American gymnast to earn an individual gymnastics medal since Shannon Miller in 1992. Wevers also delivered a unique and beautiful performance, adding striking turns and leaps to her routine to secure the gold, the first medal of any color for an individual female gymnast from the Netherlands.

Biles will compete next in the floor event finals Tuesday alongside teammate Aly Raisman.
