Following its disappointing box office run, the future of the Divergent franchise is in flux. Over at Lionsgate, it seems as if the studio is looking to salvage the series by adapting the final Divergent film into a TV movie that will lead into an original series. Unsurprisingly, the cast of Divergent is not too keen about the change. And, now, Shailene Woodley is speaking out and clarifying her stance on the franchise’s finale.
The actress recently appeared on the Today Show and was asked about her feelings on the proposed finale. Shailene said she would be interested in reprising her role as Trish for a fourth Divergent installment if it were a film.

Of course, many fans may notice that the actress’ response to the Divergent finale has changed following her last comments. Shailene found herself spinning headlines after she did an interview with Screenrant and said she wasn’t all that interested in bringing Trish to the small screen.
“I didn’t sign up to be in a television show,” she said. “Out of respect to the studio and everyone involved, they may have changed their mind and may be doing something different, but I’m not necessarily interested in doing a television show.”
However, the actress seems to be softening her stance in her most recent interview.
“I signed up to tell the whole story of Tris and I would love to be able to do that. Nothing would make me happier,” she stressed.
Of course, Shailene isn’t the only cast member of Divergent who feels uncertain about the franchise heading to television. Not long ago, Miles Teller told Variety he hadn’t even talked to anyone about the move.
“When we all signed on for the first one we had every intention of finishing it theatrically,” he said. “We signed on for x amount of movies and you take that all into consideration. We wanted to see that storyline finish. You know, it’s moving into a different format. So who knows? We all really enjoyed that time we spent together and those characters.”
Originally, the fourth Divergent installment, titled Ascendant, was set to start filming this summer for a June 2017 release. However, those plans were put on-hold once Allegiant failed to impress moviegoers. Lionsgate began to reevaluate the future of the franchise and hoped to make Ascendant into a TV movie. The film would also introduce a batch of new characters that would then be given their own spin-off series.
However, it looks like those plans may be in flux now considering the cast’s vocal backlash. What do you guys think about the change? Would you like to see Divergent continued on the big or small screen? Let us know in the comments below!
