Raj Koothrappali started off as a super shy, and even more nerdier, character than all of the other Big Bang Theory characters. He couldn’t talk to girls, had an extremely dependent relationship with Howard, and had a strange mysterious past back in India. He was also the butt of all the jokes when it came down to it.

Of course, he was also an essential part of the comedic duo of the group. He and Howard were always there to lighten the mood when the show would take on a serious subject, or even if it just needed an extra touch of ridiculous antics. Raj and Howard were the friends you wanted around for fun, jokes, and so you alway knew you weren’t the weirdest one in the room

Then Howard got married and Raj started to be able to talk to girls. That is when the dynamic changed a bit. While everyone was off getting hitched, Raj was going through failed relationship after failed relationship. His dependency and closeness with Howard diminished. But, it doesn’t matter because now he has Cinnamon – his faithful dog.

Can’t talk to Girls

It’s hard to remember, but back when the show first started, Raj was just slightly more disadvantaged when it came to women than the rest of his nerdy friends. He had a complete inability to talk to people of the opposite sex, and not just directly, he couldn’t even speak out loud if there was a woman in the room with him. At least it made for quite a few fun “telephone” moments between Raj and Howard.

Suddenly Can Talk To Girls

How to get Raj to talk? Just mix him a strong drink. Turns out the cure for his shyness is just a little bit of liquid courage. Though, he did prove that non-alcoholic beverages offer a placebo effect, as long as you don’t tell him as he is about to speak to a girl.

Bonds With Amy

Two characters that rarely get any time together are actually more alike than anyone realizes. Amy and Raj both grew up without others around them for support – though, unlike Sheldon, they needed the support. So, in one episode, Raj and Amy end up having a great conversation together that really shows that they can understand each other. Sadly, this friendship isn’t something that is focused on a lot in the show.
