Disney has a live-action version of its popular animated film Mulan in the works, and now we know thanks to THR that the movie is slated to hit theaters on November 2, 2018.

Ever since this live-action version of Mulan was announced, it's courted a combination of excitement and controversy. The excitement comes from Disney fans (and movie audiences) who have loved recent live-action adaptations spun out of the studio's vault of animated films, including The Jungle Book (2016), Cinderella (2015), and Maleficent (2014).

The controversy comes as Mulan is a particularly sensitive project to remake in live-action; Mulan is an actual person - an iconic figure from ancient Chinese history, and therefore, adapting the story into a Diseny live-action film has many worried that this precious piece of cultural history could end up "whitewashed," with non-Asian actors filling in the leading roles.

"Whitewashing" has become an ugly word particularly where Asian culture and Hollywood are concerned. The most recent high-profile controversies over the subject have come with the impending release of Marvel's Doctor Strange, as well as the popular viral teaers for Ghost in the Shell. The former stars Tilda Swinton in the role of The Ancient One (traditionally an Asian character - though not a very PC depiction of one); the latter stars Scarlett Johansson as one of the most iconic and popular female asian characters in pop-culture.

We have yet to see what the casting for Mulan is all about. Newcomers Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek are working on the screenplay, while Chris Bender and J.C. Pink will act as producers.
