San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick told the press on Thursday that he plans to donate $1 million to charity that will aid communities in need. The announcement came only hours after Kaepernick and his fellow teammate Eric Reid decided to take a knee during the National Anthem on Thursday’s game against the San Diego Chargers.
Prior to the game, the 28-year-old NFL player spoke with military vet Nate Boyer, and the duo agreed that taking a knee was a better decision than sitting in light of the fact it was “Salute to the Military Night.”

“We were talking to him, ‘How can we get the message back on track? And not take away from the military?…But keep the focus on what the issues really are,’” Kaepernick explained regarding his conversation with Nate Boyer.
He continued, “As we talked about it, we came up with taking a knee, because there are issues that still need to be addressed. And it was also a way to try to show more respect to the men and women that fight for this country.”
Colin Kaepernick tweeted a photo of his meeting with Nate Boyer. The tweet read: “Thanks for the invite brother…Good talk. Let’s just keep moving forward. This is what America should be all about.”

Nearly every time Kaepernick stepped foot on the field, he was met with an overwhelming amount of boos. One sign in the crowd read: “You’re an American. Act like one.”
After the game, Kaepernick said that the first $1 million he earns this season will be donated to the organizations that work with the community.
“I am planning to take it a step further, I’m currently working with organizations to be involved, and making sure I’m actively in these communities, as well as donating the first million dollars I make this year to different organizations to help these communities and help these people,” he explained.
