During the Eid al-Adha celebrations in Bangladesh, the aftermath of animal sacrifices mixed with heavy rains have left the streets flooded with blood.

On Wednesday, startling images surfaced online showing the residents from the capital of Dhaka wading and driving through the streets that were running red with the bloody rainwater.

CNN explains that Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is a Muslim celebration to commemorate when God appeared to Abraham (Ibrahim to Muslims) in a dream and asked that he sacrifice his son as an act of obedience.

There were 1,000 places across the city that the authorities gave permission for people to make sacrifices, but there were some residents who still killed animals in the street.

Due to the heavy rain and poor drainage system in Dhaka, the blood-stained water spread all over the streets of the city.

The shocking photos received heavy backlash from some users on social media. Twitter user Jyoti Shankar tweeted photos of the bloody water with the caption: "Rivers of blood in #Dhaka after Eid-Al-Adha celebrations. I feel sick seeing this. Disgusting !!"

While some complaints were solely launched at the insufficient drainage system, there were a group of critics and animal activists that called the ancient ritual "barbaric."
