Alien: Covenant has taken the top spot at the box office this week, dethroning Marvel’s latest film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Alien: Covenant won the Friday box office and is on pace to win its opening box office weekend with approximately $40.2 million over its first three days, including $4.2 million in early Thursday night showings. That would give Alien: Covenant the second-highest opening of any of the Alien movies.

Alien: Covenant, the sixth film in the sci-fi horror franchise, earned $15.35 on Friday from 3,761 theaters.

After two weeks on top, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 may not be the biggest movie at the box office, but its theatrical run is still going strong. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is expected to finish in second place at the box office with $35.2 million accrued over the weekend. The film earned $8.8 million on Friday from 4,347 theaters bringing its three-week box office domestic total to $275.5 million.

Young adult romance Everything, Everything is expected to finish in third place this weekend. The film opened to $4.7 million from 2,801 theaters on Friday. The film is expected to earn $11.5 million over its first three days, but strong word of mouth could bump that total up even higher.

Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn comedy Snatched looks to finish in third place. The 20th Century Fox production is expected to earn $7.3 million from 3,511 theaters. That will bring its total after two weeks to $32.5 million.

Fox’s Diary of Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul is expected to round out the top five at the box office this weekend. The film opened in 3,157 theaters to $2 million on Friday night. The family film is expected to come in with $7.2 million over the weekend.
