Today we got our first look at Ocean’s 8, the new heist film starring an all-star cast of female actors. Buzz about the film is growing, and (for better or worse), Ocean’s 8 seems poised to be 2017’s pop-culture Ghostbusters story, inviting all kinds of debate about female-centric reboots of popular movie franchises.

It’s an Ocean’s Eleven Spinoff
This seems to be the biggest point of confusion early on: but yes,ย Ocean’s 8ย is a spinoff of theย Ocean’s Elevenย movie trilogy.
Given the name of the lead character in the story, “Debbie Ocean,” the connection to the originalย Ocean’s Elevenย franchise seems pretty direct and clear: Debbie (Sandra Bullock) is presumably related to Danny Ocean (George Clooney) and shares the family talent for thievery and con artistry.ย

Ocean’sย 8ย has put together an impressive ensemble of ladies, and now we have the full lineup and the names of the characters they’re each playing:ย

The Story
Along with the first look at the cast in character, we were also given the first official story synopsis forย Ocean’s 8:ย
SYNOPSIS: “The tide will turn as Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) attempts to pull off the heist of the century at New York City’s star-studded annual Met Gala. Her first stop is to assemble the perfect crew: Lou (Cate Blanchett); Nine Ball (Rihanna); Amita (Mindy Kaling); Constance (Awkwafina); Rose (Helena Bonham Carter); Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway); and Tammy (Sarah Paulson).”
So basically… It’s anย Ocean’s Elevenย film.
There Will Be Cameos
People may look atย Ocean’s 8ย and wonder if there will be any direct connection to theย Ocean’s Eleven movies.

Creative Team & Release Date
Ocean’s 8ย is being directed by Gary Ross, who is the multi-Oscar nominated director ofย Seabiscuit, Pleasantville, The Hunger Gamesย and most recently,ย Free State of Jones.ย
Ross also co-wrote the script, alongside Olivia Milch, the daughter of NYPD Blueย andย Deadwoodย creator David Milch, who is making her feature-film debut. For a lot of fans, there will be plenty of curiosity in seeing how Olivia’s talents on the page match up to her dad’s.
Ocean’s 8ย will be released on June 8, 2018.
