Mobb Deep rapper Prodigy passed away at age 42 less than two months ago, and the musician’s cause of death has finally been revealed.
E! News reports that the star died from accidentally choking. He was being treated in the hospital for sickle cell anemia where he choked on an egg, and an investigation was launched to determine whether Prodigy died from choking or from symptoms of the disease.

The weekend before his death, Prodigy was performing on the Art of Rap tour with artists Ice-T and Ghostface Killah. He was reportedly hospitalized in Las Vegas due to complications with sickle cell.
“It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep,” Prodigy’s rep said in a statement. “Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis.”
The statement continued, “As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.”
