A Florida raccoon broke into a convertible on Wednesday morning to give birth to her two cubs, proving they’re not called ring-tailed bandits for nothing.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports that a pregnant raccoon found her way into the backseat of a car to give birth to two cubs.

The raccoon apparently climbed through a plastic window cover, tumbled into the back of a parked convertible at an auto shop and sat in the backseat, awaiting her two miracles.

Nonprofit rescue and rehabilitation organization, Wildlife Inc. was called to the rescue, with Devon Straight arriving at the scene to help transfer the raccoon and her newborns to a safer facility.

Straight says the experience was an unusual twist on his other daily rescues.

“It was quite an interesting and challenging rescue,” he said. “It’s just one of those calls that’s different and stands out.”

Straight says he feels bad for the owner of the car as the raccoon tore up the sun shades, chewed some shoes out and peed all over.

While there was only one baby present when Straight arrived, he tells the publication that raccoons usually have about three to five per litter, noting he couldn’t find any other newborns. Evaluating the family to be healthy, Straight then transported them to a wooded area away from humans and released them back into the wild, though the mother raccoon was quite shaken up by the whole experience.

Straight shared the story on the nonprofit’s Facebook page, writing, “I captured the mother, then [two] caring employees and I searched the entire car for her babies. Once they were both accounted for, I relocated them to some woods where she can continue to raise them.”
