During the MTV Movie & TV Awards, a new clip from this fall’s theatrical adaptation of Stephen King’s It debuted, increasing horror fans’ anticipation levels to new heights.

When people think of It, they typically conjure up images of the terrifying clown Pennywise, portrayed by Tim Curry in the original 1990 mini-series. This new clip and initial teaser trailer has spent more time focusing on the dynamics between the young protagonists, the “Losers Club,” keeping glimpses of Pennywise to a minimum.

As proven from reactions to last night’s clip, less of Pennywise is definitely more, as his short appearance at the end of the clip was enough to horrify viewers. Similarly, glimpses of Pennywise were used sparingly in the original mini-series, focusing more on the drama between the characters and only punctuating the creepy moments with the clown’s appearance.

Although many Twitter users showed their excitement for the film, not everyone gave the clip universal praise.

When it comes to adaptations of Stephen King novels, It is one of the most beloved. Most notably, Curry’s performance in the film helped set the standard for how to portray a scary clown, continuing to leave an impact on audiences almost 30 years later.

The original mini-series was broadcast in two parts, with the first part emphasizing the history of the main characters’ childhoods and the second part focusing on their adult lives. Following in the model, the first film will focus solely on the children and their early encounters with the monstrous Pennywise.

It’s a good year to be a Stephen King fan, with It being only one of many slated adaptations of King’s properties.

On August 4, The Dark Tower hits theaters, an amalgam adaptation of King’s beloved fantasy series. Rather than adapting one of the many books in the series, the film will both incorporate elements from those stories and original ideas, providing surprises for even the most devout King fan.

Making Dark Tower even more interesting, the first trailer has included references to other King stories, like offering a glimpse of the Overlook Hotel, which was where the events of The Shining took place, in addition to a possible glimpse of Pennywise’sย decrepit amusement park.

The big screen isn’t the only place to find Stephen King this year, with an adaptation of The Mist coming to Spike later this year.

In another re-imagining of the source material, The Mist TV series aims to expand the scope of the story. The original tale was set in a grocery store, with the shoppers turning on one another over the course of a night. Instead, The Mist will incorporate multiple locations within a town upon which a deadly fog has descended, allowing multiple different groups of people to have varied reactions on how to handle the supernatural situation.

Based on initial reactions to teasers and clips, It looks like it could draw huge box office numbers, priming itself to be one of the most financially successful horror films of all time.

It lands in theaters on September 8.
