IKEA Recalls 29 Million Dressers And Chests After 6 Children Crushed To Death

Ikea has issued a voluntary recall of 29 million dressers and chests after six children have died and more have been injured due to the chests tipping when they are not anchored to the wall.

Ikea has been under scrutiny for years regarding the safety of these dressers, as one child after another died or sustained injuries as a result of the unstable furniture that does not meet safety standards.

In the summer of 2015, Ikea issued a recall of the MALM chest of drawers while offering a new wall mounting kit so parents could anchor the furniture to the wall. This past February, a 22-month-old child was killed by one of the six-drawer dressers when it fell on him after his mother left him in his room for a nap prompting renewed outrage with massive furniture manufacturer.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission finally announced on Tuesday that Ikea will voluntarily recall 29 million units. Instead of offering a wall mounting kit, the recall is offering a repair kit or a refund. Customers may receive full refunds for products made between 2002 and 2016. For products manufactured before 2002, customers can return the products to stores for a partial store credit.

CPS chairman Elliot Kaye told ABC News, "Enough is enough. These are inherently very dangerous and unstable products if children are around them."

All IKEA customers that have purchased the faulty chests and dressers are being urged to keep their children away from the potential hazard until they have either anchored the furniture properly to the wall, or returned it for a refund.
