“You can take me out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of me,” sings Grammy Award-winning country star Kacey Musgraves in her latest single, “Dime Store Cowgirl,” off her recent CMA Award-nominated Album of the Year, Pageant Material. Touring, award show performances, a hit album and now — a cowboy boot line, Musgraves is one busy Womanista! We recently caught up with Musgraves at her Kacey for Lucchese boot launch in the heart of downtown Nashville to get the scoop on her boot-stompin’ collaboration.
According to the native Texan, she’s been a boot-wearer all her life, starting with a “really tiny pair of red cowboy boots” when she was just a little girl singing Patsy Cline songs in them. Musgraves teamed up with the Texas-based Lucchese and legendary bootmaker for the capsule collection and she could not be prouder of her partnership. When she was first approached by the iconic brand, “I freaked out,” she says excitedly, before interjecting, “Also to be noted, that our names go really well together. ‘Kacey for Lucchese’ — I was like, ‘This is a match made in heaven!’” Musgraves not only co-wrote all 13 songs on Pageant Material, but also co-produced her second studio album, so it’s not hard to believe that she was “so hands-on in the process” of creating her Western-inspired footwear. “Probably to a fault,” she admits.

Musgraves details how she was offered the unique opportunity to tour Lucchese’s El Paso, Texas-based factory, where she saw first-hand how intricately her cowboy boots would be made. And after witnessing the unique hand-detailed craftsmanship up close, she humbly shares, “It’s pretty crazy!”
As if straight out of a fashion lover’s dream, Musgraves says there is one entire room solely dedicated to “just threads — there’s one whole wall of just metallics — every color. And there’s all these different leather and suede options too!” Musgraves proudly claims that Lucchese “can literally do anything.”

Spoken like a true artist, Musgraves explains, “I just care about the small details that ultimately make up the big picture of something — they really mean a lot to me.” Making her first foray into fashion, “from the colors, the fringe, the materials, the height of the heel, the shape of the toe, to the stamp — the logo inside the boot, I was just really, really into it,” she says with a smile, before jokingly adding, “Almost too into it. It was so much fun!”
“Every detail has something to do with either my personal style, or something to do with my career that has made an impression on me along the way — like the arrow,” she shares, offering a sweet nod to her empowering 2014 CMA Award-winning Song of the Year, “Follow Your Arrow.” Musgraves chose to wear the “Golden Arrow” style for her special night, which is a ’50s-inspired boot, designed in the likeness of a vintage pair that she frequently wears onstage. The white boot, featuring a metallic gold arrow on the side, is named after her hometown, Golden, Texas.
In Musgraves’ opinion, boots are “necessary,” and if you’re new to the cowboy boot scene, she truly does believe that her stylish line offers “something for everybody.” Instead of being purely based on tradition, “There’s a little bit more of a fashionable element to some of them,” she adds.
And just in case you’re dying to know like we were — yes, Musgraves is working on a future light-up pair. “We must figure this out before somebody else does!,” she jokes.
