You’re probably familiar with the term “contouring,” and chances are you’ve probably watched your fair share of YouTube tutorials trying fine tune your skills. Jjust when you’ve mastered the look, we’re putting a new trend on your makeup radar: eye strobing.

“Be prepared to see this trend everywhere,” Katie Essary, beauty expert and founder of The Gloss Guide, tells us. “It’s pretty much a fancy new way to say you’re highlighting the inner corners of the eyes. Strobing is just taking highlighter to another level with lots of layering and using pigments that really pop.”

But before you get highlighter-happy and risk a total makeup mishap, make sure to take note of some product recommendations and insider tips and tricks from Essary in order to stay on track and flawlessly achieve the look.

What You Need

Strobing

Highly pigmented shadow: MAC eye shadow in Nylon
Cream or liquid highlighter: Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream in Champagne Shimmer
Small eye shadow brush: Surratt Beauty Classique Shadow Brush Petite
Brightening pencil: Benefit Eye Bright

Now What?
1. Apply your eye shadow and eyeliner like you normally would. Save mascara for after the strobing.

2. Apply the brightening pencil to inner corners of the eyes. Make sure to cover inner corners on top of lid all the way to the sides of your nose, and a bit underneath on the inner corner of lower lash line (repeat the same areas for each step).

3. With a small shadow brush or with your finger, apply the cream highlighter, cream shadow, or liquid highlighter to the inner corners as well.

4. To seal the deal, take the same small brush and apply a highly pigmented shadow over your cream base.

5. Finally, to complete the look, don’t forget to finish with a Womanista Approved mascara!

Voila! You can now “eye strobe” with the best of them!

Why It Works
Essary says eye strobing is a little thing that can have such an impact on your overall look. “I love highlighting the inner corners of eyes because it’s one of the best ways to look fresh and more awake, and it gives the illusion that the eyes are farther apart than they are. What’s not to love?”
