Chains, Thrones and Metallics – Oh My! Your Emmy Award Recap

Powerful and proud, bold and unabashed, talented and encouraging: women were the fashion statement of the night at the 57th Emmy Awards. There was something special in the Hollywood air last night and it brought the women of the world closer together.

Fashion may seem secondary to the incredible works the actors and actresses have created, however, on television’s biggest evening of honors, those fashions were an extension of the incredible individuals that were wearing them.

Rays of Sunshine

The jaw-dropping and boundry pushing Orange is the New Black continues to bring women characters to the forefront. Taylor Schilling may play a criminal in the acclaimed series, she shined in her Stella McCartney gown last night. Padma Laskhmi and Heidi Klum may be tough-as-nails reality show judges. At the Emmy’s, however, they were all shades of sunshine and smiles with Heidi showcasing her Versace and Padma donning Romona Keveza.

Frosted Elegance

Making a statement in beaded, dotted and sequin ivory and white gowns, the women of primetime televsion shined. Gina Rodriguez of Jane the Virgin wowed in Lorena Sarbu’s ladylike angelic gown. Regina King took home her first primetime Emmy for American Crime as Viola Davis made history as the first black actress to win “Best Actress in a Drama Series.” Davis’s speech brought the audience and viewers alike to tears, reminding everyone that opportunities need to continue to be available for women of color, “you cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.”

Lady in Red

We may have said “goodbye” to Sons of Anarchy, however Laura Prepon’s stand-out crimson Christian Siriano gown will remain in our minds. Homeland‘s Morena Bacarin gave a riveting performance as the widow and newly single mother in the latest season, her red hot number matching her character’s personality. While Ariel Winter of Modern Family also chose the powerful hue, her radiant smile finishing the look.

Pink Power

Blushes, flushes and pinks of all tones and lengths appeared. Two-time “Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series” winner Uzo Adubo gave a raw and authentic speech full of heart and grace. She stunned in her Jonathon Cohen gown while Emma Roberts was channeling her inner Victoria Lake with her custom Jenny Packham. Gifted comedian and writer Tracee Ellis Ross of Black-ish went for a warm pink in her Zac Posen.

All That Glitters

Kerry Washington’s Marc Jacobs mesh silver dress was accented by textured adornments that were Olivia Pope approved while Christina Hendricks’ Naeem Khan beaded masterpiece made us swoon. Sofia Vergara’s St. John metallic reflective gown gave the Modern Family actress extra sparkle, or perhaps it was her Magic Mike fiance?

Purple Rain

Claire Danes’ violet Prada dress with sturdy chain-link like straps, showcased an edgy yet elegant look – not unlike her complicated Homeland persona. Game of Thrones fans were vindicated as their beloved series took home “Best Drama,” which is no surprise with Lena Headey at the helm.

Playing The Blues

Frightening as she is complex in American Psycho, Jessica Lange’s indigo J. Mendel was demure more than devilish. Laverne Cox’s turquoise Calvin Klein and Amy Shumer’s blue-evergreen Zac Posen all gave us major blue fever.

Blackout

Think black gowns are boring? Not when they are on these inspiring power players. Modern Family’s Julie Bowen chose a structured form-fitting gown while, Empire empress and nominee Taraji P. Henson’s owned her chain and mesh Alexander Wang. Julianne Hough rocked her sweet and sexy black and nude Marchesa.
