For those who aren’t familiar with the game, Minecraft is a household name amongst gamers these days. Created in 2009 by Swedish programmer Markus “Notch” Persson, Mincraft is an open-world sandbox game which allows players to build entire worlds out of little textured blocks. The mechanics of the game vary depending on what players want as gamers can play survival, creative, or adventure modes to accomplish various goals. Developed by Mojang, Minecraft has destroyed its competition to become the best-selling PC game ever with over 106 million copies sold. The game also stands as the second best-selling video game of all-time behind Tetris which is yet another game that uses colorfully shaped cubes.

When it comes to Minecraft‘s film, little information have been given considering Mojang’s protection over its best-selling franchise is very tight. However, the company’s COO Vu Bui did tell The Guardian that the movie will just be telling one of the infinite stories that players could encounter in Minecraft‘s open world. He said, “When coming up with a story, we want to make sure it is just a story within Minecraft, as opposed to the story within Minecraft.”

Warner Bros. has been gifted responsibility over the film as Roy Lee (The LEGO Movie) and Jill Messick will act as Minecraft‘s producers. While the film has been touch-and-go with its previous director and screenwriters, Rob McElhenney was confirmed to be the film’s new director during his appearance at London’s Minecon 2015. Taking to social media, McElhenney told fans that he was excited to take on the project, and Mojang has teased the director will have all the resources he wants given the Minecraft‘s large budget.

It’s no surprise that Minecraft will have plenty of money backing it given the game’s unprecedented success. The video game reportedly earned Mojang $33 million on the daily before Microsoft bought out the developer and its famous franchise for a stunning $2.5 billion back in 2014. And, with Minecraft making it to the big leagues, the video game even managed to crosse platforms from its original PC designation to home consoles from Playstation, Microsoft, and even onto smartphones.

And, in just a few years, it looks like Minecraft will make yet another leap from gamer’s computers to a big screen near you.
