In the aftermath of the dispute with the Brazilian police over an alleged armed robbery during the Rio Olympics, U.S. Olympic swimmer Jimmy Feigen has decided to settle the incident by donating $11,000 to a Brazilian charity.

Jimmy Feigen, Ryan Lochte, Gunnar Bentz, and Jack Conger were accused of lying about being robbed at gunpoint in the early hours of the morning on Sunday after a night out partying. The swimmers reported the crime to the Brazilian police, but the investigation has led the authorities to believe that the crime was mostly fabricated.

Feigen’s lawyer, Breno Melaragno stated: “After a long deliberation, this agreement was reached…he will donate 35,000 reais ($10,800) to an institute, and with that the case is resolved.”

Melaragno continued, “After this donation is done, his passport will be given back to him, and he will be free to return home.” Feigen’s lawyer did not specify which charity would be the recipient of the donation.

The incident has been making headlines recently after Ryan Lochte first told NBC news that he and his teammates were held up at a gas station in the Rio suburb of Barra de Tijuca. The police began to investigate, and a discrepancy found was when video surveillance showed Lochte and his teammates returning to the Olympic village with their phones and wallets in hand. Lochte even appeared to be horseplaying with one of his teammates at the security checkpoint.

The United States Olympic Committee has already issued an apology to the country of Brazil, check out the full statement here.

Do you think this was a fair/deserved punishment for U.S. Olympic swimmer Jimmy Feigen?
