Warner Bros.’ Sully flew into the top spot at the North American box office this weekend, opening with $35.5M. That makes it the biggest September opening for WB, highest post-Labor Day opening, and the best September opening for a drama. $4M of that domestic total came from IMAX screenings, which is especially satisfying since it is the first film to be entirely shot with IMAX cameras. At the overseas box office, Sully took in $9.5M, giving it a worldwide total of $45M.

The film should have legs over the coming weeks as audiences gave it an ‘A’ CinemaScore and currently has an 84% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Coming in second-place, Screen Gems and Unique Features’ thriller When the Bough Breaks, starring Morris Chestnut and Regina Hall, grossed $15M in its debut weekend. That’s a solid debut for a film that only $10M to produce; however, don’t expect it to have strong sophomore frame since it currently has a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the audience only gave it a ‘B’ CinemaScore.

Meanwhile: Don’t Breathe, the box office champ for two weeks in a row, fell to third, earning $8M; Suicide Squad snatched fourth with $5.65M; The Wild Life opened in fifth with $3.3M; Kubo and the Two Strings placed sixth with $3.2 million; Pete’s Dragon nabbed seventh with $3M; Bad Moms clung to eighth with $2.8M; Hell or High Water grabbed ninth with $2.5M; Sausage Party took tenth with $2.3M.

From Oscar-winning director Clint Eastwood (American Sniper, Million Dollar Baby) comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ drama Sully, starring Oscar winner Tom Hanks (Bridge of Spies, Forrest Gump) as Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger.

On January 15, 2009, the world witnessed the “Miracle on the Hudson” when Captain “Sully” Sullenberger glided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. However, even as Sully was being heralded by the public and the media for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and his career.

Sully also stars Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) as Sully’s co-pilot, Jeff Skiles, and Oscar nominee Laura Linney (The Savages, Kinsey) as Sully’s wife, Lorrie Sullenberger.
