Pennywise Cackles His Way Through New TV Spots for ‘It’

With less than a month until the latest adaptation of Stephen King‘s It hits theaters, audiences are getting to see more and more of the terrifying Pennywise, the nefarious clown that torments the story’s main characters. A set of new TV spots shows the allure that the clown can have to an unwitting child, despite how horrifying we might view the character as adults. You can see the first TV spot above.

The storyline revolves around a group of young kids in Derry, Maine who come face-to-face with their worst fears when they square off against an evil clown named Pennywise, whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries. The cast of IT includes: Bill Skarsgård, Javier Botet, Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Chosen Jacobs, Wyatt Oleff, Nicholas Hamilton, Owen Teague and Logan Thompson.

For those familiar with the novel, you might recognize the scene taking place above. In it, Eddie Kaspbrak first sees the monstrous “It” emerging from the abandoned house’s basement, alternating between appearing as a leperous transient and as Pennywise the clown. After telling the rest of the Losers’ Club about this encounter, they decide that this could potentially be the monster’s lair, returning to confront It once and for all.

This becomes a turning point in the story as it inspires the Losers’ Club to follow the being into the nearby sewer, which is where they have their first confrontation with Pennywise.

In the other TV spot, which you can watch below, we get to see a similar scene to what is depicted above, but in this version, we get to hear much clearer audio from Pennywise and a horrific cackle.

In the 1990 mini-series adaptation of the novel, the most memorable element was Tim Curry’s performance as the Pennywise, setting the bar pretty high for Bill Skarsgård to live up to.

Marketing materials released early on avoided showing too much of Pennywise, but now that we’re in the home stretch of marketing for the film, we’re getting more glimpses as the actor’s performance, which, based on his voice alone in the clips above, is sure to create nightmares for a whole new generation.
