Fate of the Furious finally hit the Blu-Ray shelves this week, and fans are watching the madness unfold all over again.
The film opens with a classic street race, as Dom fights for his pride in Cuba, and it’s easily one of the best scenes in the movie. With that in mind, fans have been wondering why the Furious franchise has veered away from that classic style, and why street racing hasn’t really been a factor.

On the special features of the Blu-Ray, Vin Diesel answers that question for fans, saying that the characters have evolved to a status higher than street racer.
“Our characters have evolved to kind of ‘save the world’ status that it’s hard to justify a race anymore in this universe. So we were adamant about trying to find the perfect place to set that up, and the idea that we were able to make this race about honor was such a cool thing and such a throwback to the first one ironically.”

As the years have gone on, the stakes of the Furious movies have gotten even higher. We’ve seen tanks on highways, cars flying between skyscrapers, and even a submarine chase in the arctic.
As the final two movies in the franchise are released, let’s hope we get to see a couple more of these throwback street races that capture the feel of the original film.
