‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’ to Threepeat at Worst Holiday Box Office in Nearly 20 Years

The Hitman’s Bodyguard will win a third straight weekend as the box office struggles through its weakest Labor Day weekend since 1990, and its fourth-lowest 4-day weekend in nearly 20 years.

The 28 movies currently showing at theaters all combined will bring in roughly $94 million over the holiday weekend. No since 1998, when There’s Something About Mary took in $10.9 million at a four-day box office that only grossed $78.8 million (adjusted for inflation), has a holiday weekend been so low.

This is the first Labor Day weekend in years to see no major new wide releases, allowing The Hitman’s Bodyguard, a buddy comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, to coast to its third week at number one. The Lionsgate film is expected to earn $12.9 million over the four-day weekend from 3,370.

The victory would make The Hitman’s Bodyguard the only film of the summer to remain at the top of the charts for three straight weekends, a feat even two-time winners Wonder Woman, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Dunkirk couldn’t achieve. However, The Hitman’s Bodyguard balances that feat with the dubious honor of being the lowest-grossing box office winner of the year so far.

Annabelle: Creation will also manage to hold onto its number two spot at the box office for a third straight weekend. The fourth movie in The Conjuring franchise is expected to earn $8.5 million over four days from 3,358 locations.

Wind River is using the box office lull to continue to climb the charts. The film jumped up to fourth place last weekend and will claim the third place spot over Labor Day weekend, earning $7.3 million from 2,602 locations.

French animated feature Leap! drops to fourth place in its second weekend in North America. The film is expected to earn $6.65 million over the holiday weekend from 2,705 locations.

Critical darling Logan Lucky will round out the top five once again, earning $5.5 million over the holiday.

Keep reading to see how this weekend’s top five films stack up against each other at the box office.
