The Hitman’s Bodyguard and Annabelle: Creation will remain in the top two spots on the charts as 2017’s struggling summer box office reaches a new low.
The weak box office can be partially blamed on the buzz surrounding this weekend’s Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather fight, but the larger issue is that the box office has gone several weeks without a blockbuster that has really excited moviegoers. The Dark Tower flopped and Transformers: The Last Knight, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and War for the Planet of the Apes all had weaker box office performances than their franchise predecessors.

Compared to last year, the summer domestic box office is down 13.4 percent to 3.63 billion and the year-to-date total is down 5.4 percent to $7.38 billion. Studios and theaters will be looking to a stacked fall and holiday season to save the day with It hitting theaters in early September, Justice League and Thor: Ragnarok arriving in November, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi debuting in December.
In its second weekend, Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson’s buddy comedy The Hitman’s Bodyguard earned $3 million from 3,377 theaters on Friday. The film is set to earn $10.1 million in total over the weekend, the lowest weekend total for a first place finish at the box office this year.
Annabelle: Creation remains in the second place spot. The fourth film in The Conjuring franchise earned $2.5 million from 3,565 theaters on Friday, setting it up for an $7.4 million weekend.
Animated feature Leap!, which was originally released as Ballerina in France in 2016, slides into the third place spot in its opening weekend. Featuring the voices of Elle Fanning, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Maddie Ziegler, Leap! earned $1.5 million from 2,575 locations on Friday. The film is expected to earn $5 million of the weekend.
Wind River and Logan Lucky battled for the fourth place spot. Both films made in the range of $1-$1.5 million on Friday but Wind River looks to have earned $4.4 million for the weekend while Logan Lucky earned $4.2 million.
Rounding out the top ten this weekend are Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, martial arts film Birth of the Dragon, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, comedy Girls Trip, and animated comedy The Emoji Movie.
