Great Films You Didn't Realize Are Already 10 Years Old
2017 has been quite a year for movies with films like Fast 8, Get Out, and Wonder Woman making [...]
Superbad
Released: August 17, 2007
Starring: Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Seth Rogen, Bill Hader, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Emma Stone.
Superbad was somewhat of an anomaly when it hit theaters. It opened at No. 1 and stayed there for a couple of weeks. The leads, Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, were not necessarily "unknowns," but they weren't A-list stars at this point by any means so this raunchy, coming-of-age flick somewhat became the American Pie of its generation.
Ultimately it brought in a box office total of an estimated $169.9 million on a budget of about $20 million, and many of it's actors went on to be massive stars. Jonah Hill has since been nominated for multiple Academy and Golden Globe awards, and Emma Stone recently won awards for both for her performance in last years La La Land.
prevnextHarry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Released: July 11, 2007
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Warwick Davis, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Brendan Gleeson. Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, David Thewlis, and Emma Thompson.
Order of the Phoenix sees Harry and his friends begin their fifth year at Hogwarts, and no sooner does that happen that Harry is attacked by a group of Dementors.
The Harry Potter film series is iconic in way that other films may never achieve, and this fifth entry into the franchise was the second-biggest film of 2007 after grossing $939.9 million. It was the first Harry Potter film to be directed by David Yates, who went on to direct the remaining films in the series, as well as last year's Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
prevnextJuno
Released: December 5, 2007
Starring: Ellen Page, Michael Cera, Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman, Allison Janney, and J. K. Simmons.
Juno, much like Superbad, ended up being a massive surprise hit when it was released. It was made on a shoestring budget of somewhere between $6.5 and $7.5 million, but brought in $231.4 million. It was an amazing feat for a film that was predominantly indie.
Fans will remember the film revolved around a teen couple struggling with an unexpected pregnancy, ultimately deciding on adoption. Of course, things don't go quite as planned. Juno earned multiple Academy Award nominations, including one for Ellen Page for Best Actress, and it took home the award for Best Original Screenplay. Hard to believe it's already 10 years old.
prevnextNo Country For Old Men
Released: November 9, 2007
Starring: Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, and Josh Brolin
No Country For Old Men is not just considered to be one of the best films of 2007. It's considered, by many critics, to be one of the best films of the 21st century.
The Coen Brothers used this very dark thriller/drama to explore themes like "fate, conscience, and circumstance." Held together by brilliant performances from its three main stars, No Country For Old Men easily earned $171.6 million at the box office.
It paid off critically as well, as the movie earned numerous award nominations, including eight Oscar nominations. It won four of those awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
prevnextTransformers
Released: July 3, 2007
Starring: Shia LaBeouf, Tyrese Gibson, Josh Duhamel, Anthony Anderson, Megan Fox, Rachael Taylor, John Turturro, and Jon Voight
The first in a series of action-blockbusters, this first Transformers movie is still often considered to be the best one of the series. It catapulted the careers of Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, and kickstarted a franchise that's brought in an estimated $4.4 billion thus far.
Whether or not it seems like it was that long ago, Transformers is officially a decade old now, and just this year the newest entry into the series hit theaters, Transformers: The Last Knight.
