While Netflixย is releasing a bunch of thrilling movies and TV shows next month, the company did take a massive blow after Disney decided to pull its content and start its own streaming service. Learn more below.

Disney Makes Decision to Pull Movies From Netflix, Start Its Own Streaming Service

Disney is taking a huge chance after deciding to remove its movies from Netflix and launching its own streaming service.

In Disney’s latest earnings report, the company revealed plans to launch a branded direct-to-consumer streaming service in 2019, according to CNBC.

“This represents a big strategic shift for the company,” CEO Bob Iger said. “We felt that having control of a platform we’ve been very impressed with after buying 33 percent of it a year ago would give us control of our destiny.”

The news had a serious impact on Netflix’s business. After the announcement was made, Netflix’sย stock declined more than 5 percent.

Disney also unveiled plans to start its own ESPN video streaming service at the beginning of 2018. The new platform is reportedly going to stream nearly 10,000 sporting events per year from the MLB, NHL, MLS, collegiate sports, and tennis Grand Slam tournaments.

Disney also purchased a majority ownership of BAM Tech for $1.58 billion to help power the streaming service. In August of 2016, Disney bought 33 percent stake in the digital media company, which was spun off from MLB Advanced Media. Disney then went on to acquire an additional 42 percent.

“The media landscape is increasingly defined by direct relationships between content creators and consumers, and our control of BAMTech’s full array of innovative technology will give us the power to forge those connections, along with the flexibility to quickly adapt to shifts in the market. This acquisition and the launch of our direct-to-consumer services mark an entirely new growth strategy for the company, one that takes advantage of the incredible opportunity that changing technology provides us to leverage the strength of our great brands,” Iger said.

The departure of Disney content didn’t help in easing Netflixย investors’ minds considering the company is taking on a huge amount of debt. Learn more below.

Netflix Accumulates Massive Debt to Produce Original Movies and Shows

Part of Netflix’sย rapid growth requires debt and investment.ย

Earlier this month, the streaming giant racked up $20.54 billion in long- and short-term debt. The money is going towardsย producing and acquiring shows and films from across the globe. In this year alone,ย Netflix is said to be spending $6 billion in original content, according to the Los Angeles Times.

While this may seem like a huge red flag for investors, it might not be as bad as it sounds. Netflixย continues toย gain subscribers at surprisingly higher-than-expected rates, and the company sees its original content as a huge reason for these increases. Netflix believes if the company spends more money in content up front, it willย benefit them in years to come.

“With our content strategy paying off in strong member, revenue and profit growth, we think it’s wise to continue to invest,” Netflix execs told investors at the end of Q2.

“That’s a lot of capital up front, and then you get a payout over many years,” Chief Executive Reed Hastings told investors. “The irony is the faster that we grow and the faster we grow the owned originals, the more drawn on free cash flow that we’ll be.”

Industry analysts aren’t quite as confident in Netflix’s future. They’re predicting that the service will eventually plateau and may end up with too much debt to manage.

“Nobody is ever the dominant player forever,” said media consultant Mike Vorhaus. “I think they’re going to need some luck in not drowning in debt in the ultimate slowdown of growth.”

The streaming service is projecting to gain 750,000 U.S. subscribers in Q3 of this year, along with 3.65 million international subs. Those numbers are just over industry predictions, but with Q2 gains crushing expectations, the predictions seem likely to be reached.
