Alyssa Milano is the boss when it comes to talking about the real-life challenges of parenting and pregnancy. She recently spoke with Today about how she feels about her post-pregnancy body and the real challenges about being a mother.
"Be kind to yourself," Milano said, giving sound advice to her fans who feel like they are struggling with their post-pregnancy bodies. "And remember what your body is put on this earth do to, which is nurture, fee, take care of a child. Everything else is sort of irrelevant."
Milano has two children, 2-year-old Bella and 5-year-old Milo. Both of her children were delivered via C-section. And while many mother's might try to hide their C-section scars, Milano embraces hers, saying "I love my C-section scar, because it's where my babies came from."
In terms of getting her "body back," Milano seems pretty chill about the entire process. She says that she believes that the weight comes off at the right time, so there is no need to rush it. And though it is work to getting a pre-pregnancy body "back," for her "it took such a backseat to being a new mother," which has its own set of challenges.
"I think the media portrays this very romantic idea of being a mom and we see all these ladies on the white sheets loving their babies and they have on makeup and they look so pretty," she said. "And there's an element of it that's romantic, but it's a very small part. It's a really, really hard job. And I think if more women were honest about that, it would help."
"People would be able to commiserate more," she continued. "But I think we see how the media and even celebrities portray motherhood and then when it's not like that for us, we feel like we're doing something wrong. We're not as good as. And I think people need to talk about how, not only hard, but terrifying it is."
Milano does consider herself lucky in that her two kids aren't quite to the stage where there is a bit of sibling rivalry. The two little ones have birthdays that are only four days apart, so this year, Milano says they had a joint party. Luckily, sweet Milo made sure that every time he got a present, Bella did too. Fair is fair – or at least if she had one, she wasn't going to take his too.
