Earlier this month, EW debuted another look at the film, which featured star Laura Vandervoort being immersed in sand, struggling and screaming to set herself free.

Jigsaw was directed by the Spiereg Brothers, who have previously given audiencesUndead, Daybreakers, and Predestination. The script was written by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger, who gave us both Piranha 3D and its sequel, Piranha 3DD.

The upcoming sequel’s synopsis is as follows:

“Bodies are turning up around the city, each having met a uniquely gruesome demise. As the investigation proceeds, evidence points to one man: John Kramer. But how can this be? The man known as Jigsaw has been dead for over a decade. Or has an apprentice picked up the mantle of Jigsaw, perhaps even someone inside the investigation?”

When speaking with EW, the brothers described the film, saying, “Bodies are turning up, and they’re linked to Jigsaw โ€” or a Jigsaw copycat.” When asked outright if this means the original film’s killer, played by Tobin Bell, was returning to the franchise, the directors dodged a direct answer, explaining, “The DNA of Tobin Bell is all over this film.”

The series of films have been known for its creative and disturbing series of torture traps, of which the directors said, “”We’ve got some pretty wild traps in the film โ€” we don’t shy away from the gore.”

They added, “It’s such a perfect Halloween scarefest. It’s perhaps not quite as vicious and more fun, which is something we tried to inject into it. But it’s still full of good fun gore, that’s for sure. And, on top of that, it’s got a really great mystery, and there’s very interesting twists. It’s Saw for 2017.”

The film will star Mandela Van Peebles, Laura Vandervoort, Brittany Allen, and Callum Keith Rennie. Although the original film’s star, Cary Elwes, returned to the series in later sequels, he is not slated to return in this newest sequel.

Jigsaw will be hitting theaters on October 27.
