If you’re an Apple Watch wearer or you’re Fitbit obsessed, do you keep your tracker on during a romp between the sheets?
You know sex burns calories (anything does, really), and while it is nothing to scoff at, don’t count on it replacing your daily workouts.
Surprisingly, though, one study found that sex burned more than 100 calories, at least for men.
Researchers from the University of Montreal found that men burned 101 calories during a session of sex, while women hit just 69 during the rendezvous. For those of you taking notes, that means sex burns around 3.6 calories per minute.
When researchers compared those expenditures to that of running, they found that you shouldn’t skip your regular fitness routine if calories burned are a personal concern. Men burned an average of 276 calories during 30-minutes of light running, while women burned around 213 calories.
But first up on your list of questions, why is it so much better for men? “Men weigh more than women, and because of this, the energy expenditure will be higher in men for the same exercise performed,” says study author Antony Karelis, a professor of human kinetics at the University of Montreal, to TIME. He noted that men may also be the more physically active partner during sex. Fair enough.
It’s also important to note that those 70 to 100 calories burned during sex may not always be the case. Think about it: does every sex session last the same and are they all as physically taxing?
In the study, sex sessions—foreplay included—lasted about 25 minutes, which is longer than the average couple’s roll in the hay. More reasonably, sex lasts about six minutes (albeit, that’s without foreplay) according to another study in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The surveyed sex-ers were also around 23 years of age, so they may have been more active in the bedroom than older adults, not to mention they may have been exerting more energy as they knew they were being ‘watched’ for the study.
Though this may not have been the calorie-torching answer you were looking for, there are easy hacks to up your calorie burn in the bedroom—if that’s what you’re into. Obviously, you can indulge in more intense, sweaty, short-of-breath style sex to up your energy level. You can also switch positions if you need that extra workout! Research suggests that being on top is the best spot to burn more calories (and it’s the best spot to hit your G-spot!).
Though other research suggests that being with an extramarital partner (making for an exciting, forbidden encounter) can increase your energy exertion during sex, we won’t go there. Instead, let’s just focus on how to have mind-blowing sex with the one you love, okay?
Sounds like it’s time for a sexy workout tonight!
