After the body of country singer Craig Morgan's son, Jerry Greer, was recovered from Kentucky Lake Monday evening, officials are discussing what could have led to the 19-year-old's tragic death.

Greer's death came as the result of a tubing accident, when he was on an inner tube being pulled by a boat and fell into the water Sunday afternoon. Although Greer was wearing a life jacket, he never resurfaced.

The teen was still wearing his life jacket when his body was recovered, leading officials to question the reason for him not resurfacing, PEOPLE reports.

"This was just a tragic accident as far as hitting a wave and coming off [the tube] and not coming up," says Sheriff Chris Davis, who led the recovery efforts.

"We are not sure yet why he did not resurface, although the jacket he was wearing was not Coast Guard approved," added a rep for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, who is handling the investigation. "He was legal because of what he was doing and the operator had proper life jackets on board, but the jacket itself was one that many skiers and wave board users wear. As an agency, we prefer jackets that have the Coast Guard approval."

A candelight vigil planned for Monday night was canceled out of respect for Greer's family, The Tennessean reports, and celebrities and fans alike have been offering their condolences on social media.

Greer was a recent graduate of Dickson County High School who was planning to play football for Marshall University in the fall.

Dickson County High Principal Joey Holley said Greer was "loved by many of his classmates."

"His charisma and passion for sports made him one of the fiercest competitors at our school," Holley said Monday night. "He was an outstanding and one-of-a-kind athlete. He will be greatly missed. Our prayers go out to his family."
