Former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres passed away Tuesday following a stroke two weeks ago.

Mr. Peres, who was present at the new nation's birth in 1948, served twice as the country's president. He also developed Israel's secret nuclear program, but that doesn't mean he was an advocate for war. In fact, he won a Nobel Peace prize in 1994 for helping to negotiate peace accords with the Palestinians.

Mr. Peres stayed active in politics long after his presidency ended, and continued his work towards closer ties with the Palestinians through his non-governmental Peres Center for Peace.

Our hearts go out to the friends and family of Mr. Peres. May he rest in peace.
